The first use of the term ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI) is attributed to its first mention in 1955 by John McCarthy, a computer scientist at Dartmouth College. Now, 70 years later, AI is omnipresent, and predictions surrounding its exponentially increasing use range between fear of extreme dystopian scenarios and the potential solution to almost all our problems. The reality will almost certainly lie somewhere in between.
This publication presents the proceedings of GMDS2025, the 70th annual conference of the German Association of Medical Informatics, Biometry, and Epidemiology, held from 7 to 11 September 2025 in Jena, Germany. The title of the 2025 conference is German Medical Data Sciences 2025: GMDS Illuminates Health, and in its long and illustrious history, illumination of the ways in which medical informatics and associated fields can contribute to better healthcare is what the conference series has endeavored to achieve, providing a platform for the dissemination of the latest research and advocating for the positive aspects of a data-driven healthcare system. The 42 papers included in this volume of proceedings are divided into 7 sections and cover a wide range of topics within the scope of the conference remit, illustrating the ways in which AI is contributing to the transformation of healthcare delivery.
