Description

Modern conflicts present new psychological challenges, including the long-term effects of trauma, but digital tools may offer the potential to provide real-time support, assessment, and intervention even in resource-limited settings.

This publication is the result of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) entitled Digital Tools for Prevention, Mitigation, and Treatment of Traumatic Stress Responses in Terror and War - Contemporary Practices and Novel Insights, held from 10-13 September 2024 in Tbilisi, Georgia. The workshop was conceived as a direct response to the growing complexity of modern warfare and the corresponding rise in psychological casualties among both military personnel and civilians. It brought together a highly experienced group of mental health professionals, military leaders, researchers, and policymakers from around the world with the aim of exploring and advancing the role of digital tools in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of traumatic stress, particularly in military and conflict-related contexts. This volume is divided into 7 sections: building resilience and advancing secondary prevention; methodological and strategic approaches to prevention; digital tools in practice; implementation challenges and best practice; policy, technology, and international perspectives; cultural adaptation and long-term strategies; and a roadmap for Ukraine’s digital mental health framework.

Exploring the potential for AI-driven platforms, mobile health applications, and real-time biofeedback tools in combat environments, this work also offers a roadmap grounded in clinical experience for the implementation of these digital tools, and will be of interest to all who share the commitment to protect those living and working under the pressure of modern war.
