Sustainability

We advocate for sustainable practices in the scholarly ecosystem and act as a champion for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are committed to developing and building on our own sustainable practices to support the SDGs, with targets and actions established through a dedicated working group.

SDG Publishers Compact

As a signatory of the United Nation’s SDG Publishers Compact, we are committed to raising awareness of SDG-related policies and goals – publishing books and journals that will help inform, develop, and inspire action in that direction – and setting our own sustainability targets.

Raising Awareness

We are working to set specific targets, with initial priority relating to SDG 5 (gender equality) and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities) in terms of diversity. We work with our journal editors to assess board membership in relation to gender and diversity. To incentivize our journals’ development towards equality, we assess information relating to authors and editorial boards. We utilize our linked data platform LD Connect to determine a wealth of geographic analytics across all our journals. Information will soon be available on the individual journal pages. See our regular updates on the SDGs page.

Call to Action: Editors are invited to consider committing to the IOS Press Diversity and Inclusion statement (see below). For details, contact the journals team via this contact form.

Diversity and Inclusion Statement

As a publisher, IOS Press is committed to promoting and enabling equal opportunity for all, regardless of gender identity, national origin, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, or disability status. We actively work on expanding our actions and more effectively promoting access and publishing opportunities for under-represented groups. We invite the Editors-in-Chief of our journals to add their support to this process and commit to this Diversity and Inclusion Statement, expanding inclusivity actions to their editorial boards, reviewers, and authors.

Access to Research Knowledge

Our mission is to provide services that elevate quality, accessibility, and impact of research. As such, we aim to increase global diversity and diversity in publishing and advocate that researchers in the world's poorest countries can get access to our publishing services.

This is why we are proud to make all our journals available in middle- and low-income countries through the Research4Life program. Launched as Hinari by the World Health Organization in 2001, Research4Life provides developing countries with free or low cost access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content online.

Waiver Options

Across most of our journals, we offer the possibility of a publication fee waiver for corresponding authors from countries with low-income economies. The eligible countries are defined by Research4Life program – view country listing. Fees are waived on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the editor(s). Procedures differ between journals, so please check the individual journal pages for details. The corresponding author should notify the journal of their inability to pay the publication fee upon submission of the article, otherwise the request will not be evaluated. If you are eligible and your waiver request is approved, you will be kept updated about this throughout the submission process.
