IOS Press celebrates the 50th anniversary of Fuzzy Sets with two Special Issues: of Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems and Fundamenta Informaticae.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Fuzzy Sets. Professor Lotfi Zadeh published his seminal paper “Fuzzy Sets” in the journal “Information and Control” in 1965. The original Fuzzy paper is the most cited engineering publication of all times, with currently almost 60,000 citations.
Fuzzy Sets have had applications to artificial intelligence, expert systems, control theory, decision analysis and neural networks, to mention but a few areas. Real world applications in business and finance sectors, all the way to social and behavioral sciences. A large number of applications can be found in electronics and robotics systems, in cars, domestic appliances, etc.

From the editors: “This special issue on Rough Sets and Fuzzy Sets presents some novel approaches and methodologies reflecting the state-of-the-art of rough sets, fuzzy sets, and their combination. After a rigorous review process out of 47 submissions from all over the world, 17 articles were selected for publication in this issue. We are very grateful to Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh for his continuous support, in particular for his continuous stimulation in searching for complementary relationships of rough sets and fuzzy sets in order to make it possible to construct intelligent systems of better quality than those obtained by using each of the approaches separately.”

From the editorial by Editor-in-Chief Reza Langari: “Fuzzy logic continues to evolve, however, and is indeed a mainstay of machine intelligence techniques that have become central to the development of both business and social computing platforms. From a theoretical perspective, fuzzy set theory continues to evolve as well with branches that have extended into complex decision systems and algebraic and topological structures. It is important to make note of Professor Zadeh’s visionary approach and his persistence in spite of much resistance on the part of scientific community in embracing fuzzy set theory. He not only created a unique vision for representing ambiguity that is inherent in many facets of our lives, but also persisted in developing, and promoting fuzzy set theory and logic over the last 50 years.”
