The late 1990s were an exciting time for the development of medical informatics, with technological breakthroughs stimulating development and the increased use of digital platforms.</ br></ br> This book presents the proceedings of the Medical Informatics Europe conference, MIE '97, held in Thessalonica, Greece, in August 1997. It contains 192 high quality papers in the area of medical informatics which set the tone for future developments in this field of science. The main theme of the conference was Information Highways in Medicine, and the papers are grouped under the headings: health care information systems; computer based patient records; images and PACS; and education and technology assessment.</ br></ br> These papers were seen as providing a solid basis for the further development of medical informatics through the information highways.
